JOEY LEAHY

Community Mycology Area- Cloning native fungi

Fourteen years ago, a mushroom grow kit marked a complete shift in the direction of Joey’s life. After over a decade of independent cultivation and experimentation, Joey found professional footing in the lab at the rapidly expanding Bristol Fungarium.Joey’s current role includes day-to-day production, lab management, and the maintenance and expansion of the Fungarium’s native genetic library. Now, a year and a half—and three generations—into a selective breeding program focused on Lion’s Mane, _Hericium erinaceus_, Joey is eager to share the methodologies, outcomes, and ongoing developments of his work. From strain isolation and phenotypic assessment to performance trials and genetic stabilisation, this research continues to fuel his curiosity and passion for fungal biotechnology.
